by: Jan Troell The director humorously criticizes the absurdity of bureaucratic rules imposed on animals, namely the EUs decision on mandatory placing of tags on the ears of all domestic animals in order to establish their identity and origin. The human failure to do the tagging may even turn out to be fatal for the animals.
The Yellow Tag is a commentary on the present, but also a hint at what could be the shape of things to come. Despite its half-humorous tone, the film eventually strikes a rather serious note addressing the issues of identity, legitimacy, control and surveillance.
